We did not evolve to outlive our children. There is no real mechanism for surviving that..

Where on earth does that quote come from? It seems to be running through my brain and I really cannot imagine why.

I've seen that somewhere ... something about children today being obese and this being the first generation that has a lower life expectancy than their parents, because of their appalling health and lifestyles.

Yes, I have read about that situation, too - but the quote is older than that. I think it was old when I was young.

However, the very fact that it says that we evolved rather than were created may limit it to the twentieth century.

for some reason that point has been on my mind recently. I was thinking of trying to recruit a psychologist but it is difficult enough to recruit Watchers. Possibly we should be trying to recruit older people, perhaps those with children of their own?

Like Nikki Wood was? Or you mean Watcher-y type people with kids?

"Watchers with children; they might find it easier to preserve detachment in their work.

The problem of slayers with families is ..."

Giles sighed and started to wipe his glasses,

"One is a woman of thirty with a drunken husband and six children. She was found on search. One can see her point. She has no time to train unless we also take the family. At first the actually appeared to be a solution worth applying, but her off-spring are ... not Watcher types. No indeed."
